Last week's webinar HERE https://youtu.be/bmxyh3o6J18 featured a discussion with Brad Ferguson as Commentator about both the appropriate roles for government and how the Sectors of Industry, Professions, and Public Services view Alberta's economy. Sectors most represented in the survey were Education and Government, Energy, InfoTech and Management.
Alberta's Economic Resilience overall was viewed as achieved for the first time since 2015 when the KEI Network commenced monitoring. Other than immediately following shocks in the price of crude oil, Economic Resilience has continued to improve for Industries and Professions with only the Public Sector lagging, particularly Education and Research. The structural difference between the Calgary and Edmonton economies was cited as contributing to the Regional difference in Resilience with the Professions - specifically Engineering, and Public Services - specifically Education, very weak in Edmonton while in the Calgary Region those familiar with Energy and related Construction, Engineering, Environment viewed the economy as most resilient.
As for the Roles for Government, most appropriate overall were "Funding educational and training programs for ensuring that graduates can create new jobs" and "Formulate policies and employ incentives for encouraging small business innovation". Regions diverged significantly however, with Calgary much less supportive of Government intervention than Edmonton for any activity warranting government investment including technology commercialization and job creation. The Other Regions differed from both Edmonton and Calgary in being much more supportive of government Investing in technology commercialization but much less supportive for Negotiating trade agreements.

29th Annual Rotary Integrity Awards
Lesley MacDonald served as Master of Ceremonies for the Capital Region Rotary Clubs Integrity Awards Gala on May 18th at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre in Edmonton. Included as a recipient was our Editor, nominated by the Rotary Club of Edmonton Sunrise.
