Alert! The Age of Reason is coming to an abrupt end. Generative AI grants us an interpretive service based on immediate and free access to vast sources of knowledge. Since it's public introduction GPT and spinoff app(s) are growing exponentially. Enmasse they are anticipated to disrupt every profession, institution, and source of knowledge that for more than 500 years have been core to the Age of Reason. The GPT-triggered tsunami - a rush to know, to understand, to interpret, to create, is unparalleled since the enlightenment that ended the Dark Ages and led to the Age of Reason. The Age of Reason prized science and technology, logic and objectivity, research and education. It has been defined by the drive to know, the pursuit of knowledge, that challenged the previous age, the middle age's Age of Faith. Today as the Age of Reason winds down, what should we expect?
We are riding the crest of a massive knowledge tsunami into the future. Bill Gates calls it the Age of AI, but it may be even bigger than smart machines. Eventually AI will learn to reproduce "itself". Once AI is reproductive - with human guidance, the race is on to control, with AI eventually becoming dominant. At that point, the two converge: mankind engaged in a new Age entertained in the metaverse with AI in everything furthering the personalization of our needs, wants, wishes.
As knowledge is commoditized, the power of knowledge and knowledge as power will end. We will move beyond it. GPT resolves knowledge deficits and empowers us all to dream and aspire in the metaverse. We surpass the pinnacle of Maslow's hierarchy. The current chaos of global protesting is a symptom of the transition to a new age displacing the Age of Reason. It is initially disruptive, chaotic, and overwhelming to the established order. The genie of knowledge is out of the bottle, trigger widespread interest to solve, to aspire. This is a threat to liberty, to the status quo, to the institutions of knowledge, but it is also an opportunity for personal growth. The edges are raw and sometimes violent as we are witnessing with the rise in personal anxiety and public protests; this should be expected as the feature of any massive transition.
When prompted ChatGPT shared it's view of the new age as an Age of Possibility. "As GPT and other generative AI technologies continue to advance and democratize access to knowledge, we are presented with a limitless world of possibilities. This era will be defined by creativity, innovation, and collaboration, as individuals and communities harness the power of AI to solve complex problems and explore new frontiers. The Age of Possibility is not just about personalization and entertainment, but also about solving global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality. This era will be marked by a shift in values from knowledge as power to knowledge as a tool for progress and transformation. Bill Gates envisions GPT as triggering the Age of AI. GPT sees it as the Age of Possibility. Regardless of it's identity, it is more revolutionary and disruptive than the internet. In this new age, GPT contributes knowledge for identifying the common good increasing collaboration and decreasing tribalism. Everything thanks to AI will be crafted or assessed to fit individual needs and wants as GPT supplements the professions and empowers the client cum consumer. Markets are galvanized to personalize services and products. The metaverse, AI, and innovation on steroids together serve to create a new age, an age of dreamers and Dreams. - Editor
